BOO! Ok, we know, you are all grown up and those kinds of shenanigans no longer spook you. So what could poss – GLOBAL WARMING!! See, made you jump. In this Eeeeeeek-o-friendly Halloween special we are going to treat you to some Ahhhhhhhhsome tips to make this October 31st scary green.
· The pumpkin
- Look for locally grown organic pumpkins
- Don’t waste the goods – pumpkin seeds can be easily dried, salted and turned into a delicious and healthy snack
- Use beeswax candles (that emit no soot) over soy-based or paraffin candles
- Give Jacko a proper burial – compost your pumpkin when November rolls around
· The costume
- o Call up friends and see if you can swap old costumes
- o Go to your local vintage clothing stores
- o Make a costume using recycled materials
- o Make your young one a candy bag out of a pillow case, or provide them with a reusable shopping bag in lieu of plastic
· The decorations
- o Skip the plastic store-bought witches – use items that you already have, to create a spooky ambiance (leaves, garlic, melted candles etc.)
- o Make your other decorations with recycled materials from around the house (old nylons make great cobwebs!)
- o If you feel the need to purchase, make sure they are decorations that you can store and reuse year after year
· The party
- Rather than sending out paper invitations, use e-vites to round up your guys and ghouls,
- Don’t use plastic cups or utensils
- Commute by foot, transit, or broomstick
November 1st shouldn’t leave you with bags full of trash. The trick to reducing waste this Halloween is simple, if you follow these tips. The treat is having a great time without leaving behind a werewolf sized carbon footprint.
