5 Ways Forward: Great Bicycle Innovations

The bicycle is arguably one of the most eco-friendly inventions of all time. Over the years, some very creative greentrepreneurs have thought outside the box and come up with ways to make the bicycle an increasingly fundamental staple in the eco-revolution.

1. Bamboo frames – At first glance you would have thought that the Biebs was in town. In Vancouver this past May, the Epic Sustainability Expo showcased dozens of green products – with one in particular spawning crowds of onlookers and a sea of flashing cameras. The bamboo bike frame not only uses natural material in lieu of man-made compounds, but also boasts many aesthetic and operational advantages.

2. Bicycle-powered stage – We have all marvelled at the bright lights and the paramount sounds of that exude from a concert stage. Likely, the last thing on your mind is “jeez, I bet the kilowatt expenditure is astronomical!” – well unfortunately it can be (sorry to be a buzz kill). Enter the pedal powered stage! The motion of cycling powers a generator, which in turn powers everything from lighting to that Fender Stratocaster tuned up for the big solo (no stairway to heaven please).

3. The bicycle taxi – These bicycle chariots are a great alternative to carbon emitting taxis and a very fun way to get around short distances. They can be found in many urban cities, and are perfect for doing a little bar hopping on the weekend.

4. Electric bicycle – For some, the conventional bike still is not a viable alternative to a car. Huffing and puffing before you get to work might not seem very appealing – regardless of your perturbation for the environment. The electric bike provides ease of mobility while still maintaining eco-friendly standards.

5. Bike sharing programs – Many urban cities have now adopted co-ops or bike sharing programs that allow individuals to rent a bike for a designated period of time. This sharing-is-caring initiative acknowledges the drawbacks of owning a bike, such as cost, theft, storage etc. Through convenience and affordability these programs provide people with a great eco-friendly alternative (sound familiar??……ribbit).
