Moving Back to College? Seven Tips to Make It Suck Less

Summer’s ending, what a drag – but moving back to school doesn’t have to be. Follow these tips to make the next few weeks of your life taste great, less filling… err, more fun and less stressful.

#1. Size matters. It’s time to get real about the size of your new place. Better to pack light and go shopping for the things you’ll need, rather than cramming everything you own into your new place.  Friendships have been lost over not being able to find the bathroom.

#2. Coordinate your coffee potsNow’s the time to give your roommates a ring and plan what each of you are bringing to your new pad. A couple of couches may come in handy, but who really needs three toasters?

#3. Go ahead, play with frogs. I know your mamma told you not to, but the kind of frogs we’re talking about will move your stuff in style. Would you rather waste your time running around town dumpster-diving for sketchy cardboard boxes, or relaxing at your friend’s end-of-summer BBQ bash? Thought so. See if you have FROGBOX in your city.

#4. Snack on peanuts, don’t pack with peanuts. Skip the bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and messy newspaper. To protect your fragile stuff in an eco-friendly way just use blankets, sheets, and clothing as padding. You’ll cut waste and save space.

#5.Thrifty is nifty. Most of the stuff you buy before school will end up by the dumpster when you move out in May. Why not find a local upscale thrift store and pick up some gently used furniture or kitchen goodies? You’ll avoid that big-box décor look, while getting to stretch your creative muscle. And maybe pick up one of those lonely lava lamps while you’re there for a good laugh.

#6. Speaking of trucks. Ok, we weren’t. But still, avoid a last minute panic attack and book your moving van or truck now anyway. You don’t want to get stuck with having to rent a monster-sized semi because that’s all that’s left on the lot – wasting your money and slapping the environment in the face.

#7: Pack a sobriety (or sleep deprivation) survival kit. Let’s be honest – the first thing you’re going to want to do after you move your stuff in is relax and catch up with your friends over a refreshment at your favorite spot. That’ll be no sweat when you can count on coming home to a travel bag filled with your living essentials like a toothbrush and change of clothes. College is back in session, and you’ve got to be prepared for anything!
