As a company that is deeply rooted in the green movement, we love keeping stock of what other companies are doing to further their green initiatives. Awhile back, I noticed that Sun-chips had replaced their traditional plastic bag with a biodegradable alternative that could actually be composted. This new bag design piqued my interest and I purchased a bag to… ahem… “test” the new concept (yes, my job is that good). I loved the concept, but noticed the new bag created quite a bit of noise when trying to open/close, to me this wasn’t an issue but then I stumbled across this article in The Star that brought up the issue of the new bag design.

“customers complained the bag was too loud. The stiffer material made it give off noise that, measured in decibels, is about as loud as a busy city street. The criticism grew so deafening that, in the U.S., the company switched back to its original bag for most flavours in October.”

Sun-Chips (owned by PepsiCo Inc.) made the choice, because of customer feedback, to switch back to their original packaging in the US due to the fact that the compostable bags were too noisy. This highlights a tension that we encounter on a daily basis, are consumers willing to change their habits due to environmental issues?
