Green Space in any community has a tangible impact. There have been numerous studies on the connection between green space and social illness. Even small gardens have been proven to reduce stress and aggression. The process of creating gardens also builds community. Right now, you have the opportunity to vote for an exciting project that will create green space and jobs in Vancouver's Downtown East Side!
The Strathcona Business Improvement Association (SBIA) has submitted a proposal to create 20 to 30 community micro-gardens throughout the Strathcona neighbourhood. The gardens would be installed on private properties adjacent to public spaces in highly visible, underutilized areas. Either ornamental or edible depending on the location these gardens will be built in collaboration with the social enterprise at Mission Possible and pending partnerships to engage and train local youth.
It's easy. Just log on to the Aviva Community Fund website, register and vote for the Strathcona Community Micro-Gardens project. You can vote once a day until Oct.15th so get on there and do your part. A few minutes of your time can help to make Vancouver's Downtown Eastside a better place to be!
