Doug left us a year ago after a valiant battle against cancer but has remained firmly in the hearts and minds of his family, friends and colleagues.

Doug passionately believed that business and social responsibility were ultimately connected and that by combining profits with a higher purpose, a deeper level of success could be achieved. He believed in the concept of sustainable prosperity, a vision that views an organization’s success as financial progress in step with environmental and socially responsible principals.

Doug, personally and through his company Frogbox, cared about people and the planet. He became widely recognized as a business leader, after being featured on the Dragon’s Den, and winning, and has served as an inspiration to the business community at large

It’s clear that in his short life, Doug hade a tremendous impact on business. Perhaps most importantly though, he was known as true and trusted friend a devoted and caring father and a loving and committed husband. We are deeply grateful for the work and the passion that Doug brought to life and are dedicated to continuing his legacy through this endowment.

The recipient of the money raised here will receive a full scholarship to Social Venture Institute at Hollyhock where they will have access to the same experiences, information and contacts that were part of Doug’s success story. Every dollar donated will go into the fund and any extra monies will go toward future bursaries.

<span style="font-size: 12px; And while all of us at FrogBox are very excited for the festivities with friends and family, we’ve also taken a moment to make a list (and, yes, we’ve checked it twice). There's lots of ways to enjoy all the goodness of the season without creating all the waste, so here’s our list of tips for a sustainable, eco-friendly holiday:

Buy local - Local craft markets and artisan stores are great places to find unique gifts that come without the cost of long-distance transportation and greenhouse gas emissions. There’s often less packaging too. Even better, try finding gifts made from recycled or upcycled materials.

Give experiences in place of stuff - experiences make great memories that often last far longer than physical stuff that we may or may not even ever use. Tickets to museums, aquariums, theatrical and other art performances. Trips to a new destination. Ski days. Bungee jumping. Massage. There's all sorts of things that will make for great lasting memories and less waste in the bin.

Give ‘battery-free’ gifts - The EPA states that about 40% of all battery sales occur over the holidays. Most of us have heard the bad news that goes along with climate change: rising sea levels, extreme weather, greater flood risks, and changes to crop yields. In fact, it’s hard to not get caught up in the bad news.

But here's some good news about prevention:

In September, the UN Climate Summit was a call for awareness and action on global warming. The goal of the summit was to encourage more than 120 member states to sign-up to a new global climate agreement in 2015. It was the largest number of government heads to ever attend a climate conference. Leaders promised greater use of clean energy, pledged billions for a global climate fund to help developing nations, and set specific targets to curb greenhouse gas pollution. All 196 countries agreed to an outline text for a new global climate agreement to be reached in Paris in 2015. It’s not decisive action, but it keeps that action on track. And it did eliminate a fundamental distinction between developed and developing nations - putting all nations on the same footing. It reiterated language from the US/China agreement. Halloween is a great holiday but it also often encourages the purchase of a lot of one-time-use disposable fun. In honour of this year’s Halloween (which is here tomorrow!), we’ve got some simple last minute tips to keep it fun, spooky and environmentally-responsible.

Use What You’ve Got! - Think hard about what you’ve already got and have a look through the closet before you buy something new. Making a costume out of some old clothes can be extremely effective, even making a thrift store purchase means you aren’t purchasing costumes that can be disposable and harmful to the environment.

Re-recycle! - Using old plastics, cans and bottle caps for costumes for kids as well as decorations give one more use for that late night snack!

Paint It - Avoid Rubber/cardboard masks that are essentially single-use items, instead use eco-friendly face paint, perfect for the kids and an awesome activity that lets out your creative side! - http://www.naturalearthpaint.com/products/natural-face-paint-kit

No Plastics Bags or Buckets - Reuse old pillow cases and decorating them with the kids, they can use them for years to come and will hold enough candy to keep them up all night long, perfect right?!

Carve Smart - Decorations don’t all have to be plastic and cardboard, this year keep it natural with an abundance of pumpkins (carving is a fun, creative activity for the kids). Pumpkins can be composted - and hopefully you can use your compost for fertilizer next spring!

Burn Smart - Candles keep it creepy - but paraffin isn’t the best for the environment, buy alternative soy-candles to keep those jack-o-lanterns burning http://www.theecologist.org/green_green_living/home/954213/five_of_the_bestecofriendly_scented_candles.html

Cardboard can be fun - we know there are better options when it comes to moving boxes! But most of us have some cardboard around or can find some easily and it’s a very workable, recyclable material for making fun costumes. Check out these examples.

Halloween is a great time to practice reducing, reusing and recycling in the name of good fun. But not everything fits into a moving box.

Here, we’ve put together a list of items that deserve special attention, and suggestions on how to pack them with extra care. With a bit of planning and the right supplies you’ll be able to move these trickier items with ease.

Plants. A move can be disastrous for your green friends, so handle them carefully. For larger plants, you can wrap craft paper around the plant to protect the leaves from damage. If your plants are in ceramic pots, move them to lighter plastic planters and pack up your ceramic planters. Keep in mind that plants need to remain in a temperature-controlled environment. A moving van might be too hot or too cold, so transport your plants in your car where the temperature is just right.

Artwork. Moving your art collection can be nerve-wracking. Not only are these items costly, but often highly sentimental. Nobody wants to damage a frame or get nicks in the glass. It’s best to wrap each frame in bubble wrap or packing paper and then tape something light, flat and rigid (e.g., cardboard pieces) to each side for added protection.

Glassware and Fragile Items. Pack glassware with extra care. It’s important to support and cushion fragile glass walls both inside and out. Place glassware and china in the centre of a box, then use clothing, towels, and other soft materials to fill space and line the bottom and top of your box. Pack these fragile items tightly together so they don’t shift around in transit. And don’t forget to write FRAGILE on your label. Extra tip: We recommend using newsprint to fill space, but not to wrap items; the ink can get everywhere and is slightly toxic. If you need a bundle of ink-free packing paper, FrogBox has got you covered – and it’s recycled, too!

Television and Computer Monitors. Monitors can be large, heavy, and easily damaged. You can either put a monitor inside a large box or wrap it in a blanket or bubble wrap and carry it. If you decide on the latter, you’ll want to spread the blanket on the floor, place the monitor on top of the blanket, then wrap the blanket up and around the monitor and tape it in place.

Legal Documents. Here’s an item that you should never pack. It’s very important to hand-carry car titles, marriage certificates, passports, and insurance policies. Keep these documents close, as they are difficult to replace. And be sure to make copies.

Aquariums and Fish. Fish often don't survive the motion and varying temperatures of a longer move, so you may decide to sell or give away your fish and aquarium. But if you move them, it’s best to move your aquarium and fish in your car, rather than put them in the moving truck. Leave your water-loving companions where they are until the last moment, then transfer them into a plastic bag (suitable only for very short distances) or a plastic moving tank. For more advice, check out this how-to guide and visit your local aquarium store.

Thank you for reading!

Video Checkbox:
This blog post does not contain or feature video
http://frogbox.com/blog/2014/08/how-to-pack-the-hard-to-pack-stuff#comments Moving Supplies Wed, 27 Aug 2014 23:17:26 +0000 1023 at http://frogbox.com Tips for Moving in Summer http://frogbox.com/blog/2014/08/tips-for-moving-in-summer

Boise

Calgary

Durham Region

Edmonton

Fraser Valley

Halifax

Hamilton-Oakville

Kitchener-Waterloo

Lethbridge

London

Minneapolis & St. Paul

Mississauga-Brampton

Okanagan

Ottawa

Regina

Saskatoon

Seattle

St. John's

Toronto

Vancouver

Victoria

Winnipeg

Summer, oh glorious Summer! We wish every move were tax deductible - and though most are not - some are! If you are moving for the sake of employment or to attend university, then you just may be in luck. But we’re talking taxes, so of course it's complicated. And there are many interpretations, so talk to your tax professional. Here’s the basics:

Moving at least 40km toward your new employment/school OR to enable employment with the same employer. The first one is pretty clear: you move to a new place for a new job. But the second seems to have been fought for in the courts by people who moved more than 40km toward their current job. Think promotions or moving downtown because you were told you’d be fired if you showed up late one more time. 40km is measured as the easiest publically available route - not as the crow flies. Crows don’t do taxes.

Move must be within Canada. But there are some exceptions for students. The FrogBox team came up with a top ten list of tips to help ease the pain of snow and rain.

1. Choose your move day clothing wisely. Wear layers and pack an easily accessible change of clothes bag for all family members. *extra gloves and scarves are always a bonus!

2. Clear pathways the night before (or morning of your move, if possible). Remove snow and salt the paths at the new abode too if feasible.

3. Turn on the heat and hot water. After a long day moving you are likely going to want/need a hot shower. Make sure you set up your utilities ahead of time.

4. Have hot drinks to hand. Be nice to your helpers and movers. A thermos of hot coffee and hot chocolate can help keep your team motivated and warm.

5. Protect your floors. Ice, snow and mud will dampen your spirits and the carpet in your new hallway. Plan ahead, lay down some floor protection and don’t drag your FrogBox moving boxes along the new hardwood floors!

6. Pay special attention to pets, plants and electronics. Cute family pets, pretty plants and plasma tv’s = things that don’t fare well in the snow! Plan ahead, wrap them well, ask a friend to pet-sit.

7. Prepare your vehicle. Fuel up the day before. Do you need snow chains? Does your vehicle need a service? These are not questions you want to answer on moving day. Plan ahead.

8. Arrive early. Winter means dark, early evenings. You don’t want to be unloading a moving truck in the dark.

9. Pack healthy snacks. Handy fruit, veggies, nuts and sandwiches are great.

10. Be prepared. Make a plan b! A flurry of snow on move day may be manageable, but a blizzard?! Have a back-up plan ready to go!

Video Checkbox:
This blog post does not contain or feature video
http://frogbox.com/blog/2013/11/winter-is-coming#comments Tue, 19 Nov 2013 00:18:16 +0000 987 at http://frogbox.com
